Maker’s Locale is an adaptive reuse project transforming a former auto repair garage into a dynamic multi-tenant commercial space, featuring a whiskey distillery and several restaurants. Located at the western edge of the Delmar Maker’s District, the project emphasizes material re-use and thoughtful repurposing. The design retained much of the building’s original structure while incorporating necessary updates for accessibility, circulation, and outdoor use. DTLS began involvement in the early conceptual phase, using a expedited design process to explore functional site enhancements, such as parking, accessibility, and fall protection. The final design emphasized an active, shared outdoor space facing Delmar Boulevard.

A major challenge involved accommodating a 2.5’ grade change between the building’s two floor elevations and creating an accessible outdoor area. This was resolved with a switchback ramp integrated with seating, forming an amphitheater-style space. The project also required a sunken delivery dock, a typically hidden feature, to address space limitations. DTLS carefully incorporated this into the design, considering stormwater management and blending the dock with the site’s landscape to minimize its utilitarian appearance. DTLS’s early and efficient planning helped identify site challenges early, saving time and cost for the owner.
