O’Fallon Great Streets Initiative Study

O’Fallon, Illinois

In 2023, the City of O’Fallon, Illinois participated the Great Streets Initiative planning process to reimagine the Highway 50 Corridor. The project area spans along Highway 50 from the Interstate 64 interchange to Scott Troy Road and includes Lincoln Avenue from 3rd Street to Civic Plaza, connecting key community assets like schools, parks, and sports facilities.

The project aims to enhance the corridor through multimodal streets that serve all types of transportation, balancing the needs of motorist, cyclists, and pedestrians. Specific goals include improving user access to businesses, creating attractive entryways, strengthening community connections, and promoting new development opportunities. The plan also focuses on safety and reducing flooding through improved stormwater management.

A key challenge was redesigning Lincoln Avenue, constrained by a narrow right-of-way. The solution involved shifting curbs to accommodate a narrow two-lane roadway, thereby allowing an asymmetric section with a generous landscape strip, a shared use path, and wider sidewalks. This solution balanced active transportation with limited space. North of 5th Street, the right-of-way widens, allowing for on-street parking.

This initiative aims to transform Highway 50 into a safer, more functional, and attractive corridor, fostering a sense of community and encouraging sustainable development.
