Oxford Bend Park
St. Louis, Missouri
In conjunction with the expansion of the Deer Creek Greenway, a vacant parcel will be transformed into a new park for the enjoyment of visitors traveling the 6-mile greenway connecting several communities in St. Louis County and St. Louis City. The new park, along with a 1-mile stretch of greenway, is being developed through a partnership between Great Rivers Greenway, the City of Webster Groves, and the City of Maplewood. It will be operated and cared for by the City of Webster Groves.
The park’s design process has been driven by community and stakeholder feedback, and included a design collaboration with a Washington University architecture studio class. Feedback prioritized nature-based play, skateable elements, open greenspace, shade, native plants, and art.
Situated at the entrance to a popular shopping center along a busy road, planted mounds line the edges of the park to mitigate noise and provide a physical buffer to traffic. Missouri native species are planted in blocks for ease of maintenance by parks staff. At the park’s center, log segments frame the nature-based playscape. An adjacent plaza accommodates greenway visitors with shaded seating, bicycle parking, and a bicycle repair station. The park’s loop pathway features seat walls, railings, and undulating pavements which which invite skateboarders to practice their skills in a shared use park environment.
